Hot Lips For Winter

Every season hot new make-up trends hit the catwalk – but for some of us, translating those looks for our every-day use presents something of a challenge. Just because you're cosmetically challenged, however, doesn't mean you have to miss out: instead, we've gone straight to the source to find out precisely how you can wear the hottest lip looks, without breaking a sweat. Introducing Nicole Thompson, Australia's MAC senior artist, and your latest make-up secret weapon.

Woman with red lips

Q. Why is the 'stained lip' look popular this winter?

A. Blood red, bright red, pink red and dark red lips all took over the Catwalk this season! 'Staining' the lips is extremely popular because it not only looks super sexy, but it's easy to do, too.

Q. How can our readers achieve this look for themselves?

A. Simply grab your favourite shade of red Lipstick – Viva Glam I Lipstick, $35, is perfect for a classic red, while Russian Red achieves a beautiful pink/red – and then use your pinky finger to smudge the lipstick onto your lips from the inside out.

You don't have to be too precise; the great thing about this look is the edges are meant to be soft, so it takes the pressure off the application. Also, if red is not your cup of tea, keep in mind that the stained lip can be done in any colour, so try deep pink, plum or even orange for a different take on the look.

Q. What other makeup should you wear with this lip?

A. You can wear many different make-up looks with a stained lip, because it's not typically a "heavy" lip with a sharp edge – so you can get away with wearing beautiful eye make-up without looking over-done. I love to do a soft chocolate brown smoky eye with a red stained lip. Make sure to keep the shadow shimmery so the whole look remains light and fresh; try MAC Sable Eyeshadow, $32.

Also, the classic flicked out eyeliner ALWAYS looks good with a red lip. MAC Penultimate Liner, $32, is by far the easiest liner to apply; seriously, anyone can do it!

Q. What other trends are big this season?

A. Other big trends in make-up for Winter/Spring 2010 include a focus on really hydrated, smooth shiny skin -- which means that prepping the skin before any make-up application has never been more important.
