A Winning Performance

Snow White and the Huntsman has rushed passed its competition, leaving them mired in a blizzard. The flick has enjoyed an excellent outing in the Australian market.

The first weekend is that moment when a movie’s money-making potential is most on show. Snow White and the Huntsman seems to have risen to the challenge, taking $6.194 million in the Australian market.

The flick, which includes Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron (all pictured), pulled away as the major money earner over a weekend that also saw the release of its nearest rival Brave, which raked in a none-too-paltry $2.509 million.

These figures, supplied by the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia, also showed that Prometheus, now a few weeks old, is still enjoying lively ticket sales. It came third with $1.524 million.

The Avengers, though a distant eighth in rankings for the weekend, has managed to add to its overall total and in doing so, now sits alongside the biggest Hollywood money-makers of all time.

So far, for it is still at the cinemas, the flick which saw Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner all appear on the same screen, has pulled in $52.7 million overall in the Australian market. This is about $5 million behind the second-placed Titanic ($57.6 million). However, it still has a way to go if it is to knock off number one. In fact it would have to more than double its current standings to successfully overcome Avatar ($115.5 million).

There was a point when Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence (of Hunger Games fame) were considered to be fighting. The rumours were found to be empty of merit, and were skillfully dissolved by Jennifer.

To say that they are not enemies is not, however, to say their films are not rivals. It is a competition which Jennifer seems to be winning.

The first installment of The Hunger Games series enjoyed a $9 million opening weekend.

Then, and this might be more comparable, there is the Twilight comparison. The first movie in the series took $5.4 million in its first weekend. Its follow-up, however, enjoyed $16.01 million. It will be interesting to see whether the next Hunger Games does as well… or better.

Nonetheless, Kristen can be more than a little pleased with the success of her latest venture, to say nothing of the fact she is now the world's highest paid actress.
