It's Over For Tomkat As Katie Holmes Wants Out

We can’t say this was wholly unexpected, but it's still big news when a formerly loved-up celebrity couple splits. The latest Hollywood romance to end is Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, after Holmes announced that she is divorcing her husband after nearly six years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," her attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, tells PEOPLE. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

A rep for Cruise fired back a response, confirming the news that they’re divorcing and putting the blame solely on his wife.

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," the statement read. "Please allow them their privacy."

According to documents filed in New York on Thursday, the 33-year-old actress is seeking "primary residential custody" of their daughter Suri, 6, and has requested a "suitable amount" of child support.

Sources close to the couple have told TMZ that Holmes’ decision to walk away was partly to do with Scientology, as Suri is at an age where the religion becomes a large part of her life and the couple have been a fighting over it.

Holmes and Cruise shocked the world in April 2005 when they announced they were dating, with Holmes admitting at the time that she used to have pictures of Cruise on her wall as a young girl.

"Meeting Tom — I'm just exhilarated," Holmes told W Magazine in August 2005. "He makes me laugh, we have fun, we understand each other, everything is so aligned. I feel so lucky and so — like I've been given such a gift, such a gift, you know? And it's just really amazing."

At least we’ll always have the unforgettable memories of their blossoming romance, when Cruise turned Oprah’s couch into a trampoline when declaring his love for Holmes in May 2005. Then, the announcement they were expecting their first child together came just five months later, and their lavish marriage ceremony in a 15^thCentury Italian castle.

"He’s the man of my dreams," Holmes said at the time.

To borrow from a time-old cliché, it seems the dream is over.
