Surfing movies
The Endless Summer: This classic 1966Â film captures the culture that surrounds the popular sport of surfing and has inspired many young groms to go out there and get amongst the waves themselves. Doco maker Bruce Brown follows two young surfers as they travel the globe in search of the perfect wave.
Soul Surfer: Starring AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton, this emotional and inspiring film follows a promising young female surfer as she finds the courage to head back into the ocean and compete again after losing her arm in a shark attack. It's an uplifting story that shows just how much strength humans have in adversity.
Surfing TV shows
Puberty Blues: Channel Ten will soon be screening a highly anticipated TV production of the cult novel Puberty Blues. Written by two Sydney teenagers in 1979 and later turned into a film, the series details the trials and tribulations of two high school girls living in Cronulla, Sydney. Full of parties, drugs and sex, it offers an insight into the tough Aussie beach culture of the 1970s.
Surfing books
Breath (Tim Winton): Bursting with Tim Winton's gorgeous descriptions and spot-on Aussie dialogue, Breath is a moving novel set in a small coastal town in Western Australia. The narrator Bruce recounts his teenage days growing up and chasing waves with his best mate, followed by the disintegration of their relationship and subsequently questionable events. Read it to escape into summer.
