Well, this one caught us by surprise! After a whirlwind romance, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger has popped the question to girlfriend Avril Lavigne and she said yes!

Those sneaky Canadian rockstars obviously aren’t savvy to the celebrity code of practice, one that states that you’re not permitted to hide your love from the public eye and the gossip blogs.

Romance apparently blossomed for the pair while they were writing songs for Lavigne’s upcoming album six months ago and have been inseparable ever since.

According to a friend of the couple, Kroeger “makes her so happy. Both of their families could not be more excited.”

The 37-year-old gravely voiced singer/one time Paddle Pop Lion look-a-like is rumoured to have popped the question on Aug. 8 with a 14-carat diamond ring.

Naturally, with a band as divisive as Nickelback - there’s a campaign to ban their upcoming tour of Australia for no other reason than that they are Nickelback - the majority of online social commentary has not been congratulatory toward the couple.

“The Mayans called it,” one commenter wrote: “The royal wedding of bad Canadian popstars,” wrote another.

Our fave was, “I can’t wait to see her demin gown.”

This will be Lavigne’s second walk down the aisle, her first was with Deryck Whibley from Sum 41, however the couple ended in divorce in 2009 citing that old celebrity chestnut, “irreconcilable differences.”

Following that split, Lavigne dated Kardashian cousin Brody Jenner for a couple of years, while more recently she was linked to rocker Marilyn Manson, a romance she denies.

But the 27-year-old seems to have found love with her fellow Canadian and we wish them all the best.

If only we could say we hoped they would make beautiful music together…
