One Person's Search For Australia's Best Coffee
Canteen Coffee — Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is not especially well known for it’s upper-end coffee establishments. However, there is change in the air as many of the country's finest baristas are trekking North to the relaxed beaches and suburbs of the Gold Coast to bring decent coffee to the latte-starved local population. One such place is Canteen Coffee. It’s tucked away down an arcade in Burleigh Heads (just off Park Street) and is one of the nicest cups I’ve ever had, hands down. It deserves a mention upfront for finally bringing decent coffee to the Coast.
Single Origin Roasters — Sydney
Located in Sydney’s Surry Hills, you can either sit down at Single Origin Roasters and enjoy the creative/hipster vibe, or grab a take-out cup from their hole-in-the-wall next door. Both deliver premium cups of the dark horse and are within walking distance of the CBD. You can also pick up a handy-dandy take home pack of their specialty coffee range. Just be warned, the place is growing in popularity, so there may be a short wait on your double-strength ristretto.
The Mess Hall — Melbourne
With its abundance of cafes claiming to sell the city’s best coffee, Melbourne is a mecca for lovers of the dark brew. During my ongoing search for Australia's best coffee, I try to visit The Mess Hall on Bourke Street whenever I'm in town. It’s a low-fuss joint that serves a great brew and doubles as a fantastic restaurant, so you can grab a meal with your coffee at any time of the day or night.
Fresh — Katoomba, Blue Mountains
If you’re ever taking in the vistas of the Blue Mountains, drop by Fresh Espresso and Food Bar in Katoomba or Leura for their signature coffee. They roast their own organically grown beans and take their brewing very seriously. That's why the locals line up every morning for a fresh cup of joe in their environmentally friendly cups! Fresh also offers classes for budding baristas who want to learn how to pour a good cup all on their own. (Note: It's also worth trying their eggs. Delicious!)
No Name Lane — Gold Coast
I hark back to the Coast as there are several people there opening their doors and offering some of Australia's best coffee establishments (at long last). No Name Lane is almost a hole-in-the-wall, but it's located in the new Oracle precinct in Broadbeach, so the decor is shiny and new. With one of the nicest looking machines and super-friendly staff, it’s always a pleasure to sip one of their brews. It's also a short stroll from the Broadbeach dining strip.
