Breakfast to go?

If you find yourself strapped for time in the morning, make-ahead smoothies could be your salvation. Best of all, the flavour options are endless! Here are four to get you started.

Pomegranate punch

This smoothie packs a punch and will get even the most committed sleeper up and active.

  • 1/4 cup of uncooked oats
  • 1 tablespoon of LSA mix*
  • 1 cup of pomegranate juice
  • 1/4 cup of natural yoghurt
  • 1 cup of frozen mixed berries
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chopped mint
  • Juice of half a lime

The big apple

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right?

  • 1/4 cup of uncooked oats
  • 1 tablespoon of LSA mix*
  • 1 cup of skim milk
  • 1/4 cup of natural yoghurt
  • 3/4 cup of apple puree (out of a jar is fine)
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste (substitute vanilla essence if preferred)

Tropical temptation

Take yourself on an island holiday every morning with this super yummy smoothie!

  • 1/4 cup of uncooked oats
  • 1 tablespoon of LSA mix*
  • 1/2 cup of light coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup of skim milk
  • 1/4 cup of natural yoghurt
  • 1 large, ripe banana (frozen banana will make an extra creamy smoothie)
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • Juice of half a lime

Green monster

While the colour may be a bit scary, this little monster is super sweet, delicious and includes a full serve of vegetables to boot!

  • 1/4 cup of uncooked oats
  • 1 tablespoon of LSA mix*
  • 1 cup of skim milk
  • 1/4 cup of natural yoghurt
  • 1/2 cup of diced, fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 cup of diced, fresh mango
  • 2 cups of fresh spinach
  • Juice of half an orange

*LSA mix is a blend of ground linseed, sunflower seeds and almonds available at most supermarkets in the health food section.

Method

Place oats in a blender and blend until they have the consistency of coarse flour. Add the LSA mix and blend to mix. Blend in the remaining ingredients until smooth, then stir well. Refrigerate overnight so the oats have a chance to soften. Smoothies can be consumed directly from the fridge over two to three days, or can be frozen for up to a month after the inital overnight soaking. Thaw in the fridge overnight and shake well before drinking.
