easy DIY costumes

Halloween is a fun celebration for all the family -- especially the little ones! Help them be part of the fun with these simple Halloween costume ideas. Your babies, toddlers and kids will look so cute in these adorable costumes -- you just need to add a touch of face paint to complete the look.

Almost any animal can be made with a little imagination and a tracksuit.

Cat

What you need:

  • Gold, brown, tan, black, grey or white hooded tracksuit
  • Fake fur in a colour matching the tracksuit
  • Fabric glue
  • Felt in a colour matching the tracksuit
  • Plastic headband
  • Scissors
  • 2 pairs of socks in a colour matching the tracksuit
  • Dog collar or belt, optional

Instructions:

  1. You can use a black marker to draw stripes on the tracksuit if you wish.
  2. Cut two triangles from the felt for cat ears and hot-glue to the headband.
  3. Cut a small oval shape from the fake fur for the tummy and attach it to the tracksuit with fabric glue.
  4. Next make cuffs and a collar. Use the cuffs on the sweatshirt as a guide for how wide and long you'll need to cut the fake fur strips. Attach these strips to the tracksuit jumper using fabric glue.
  5. Cut a long tail from the remaining felt and stick it to the back of the tracksuit pants with a safety pin.
  6. Pull one pair of socks over your child's hands and one pair over his or her feet for paws.
  7. Cut the collar or belt to fit around your child's neck for a cat collar!

Spider or bug

What you need:

  • Black hooded tracksuit
  • 2 pairs of black socks
  • 4 pairs of black tube socks
  • Cotton batting

Instructions:

  1. Stuff the cotton batting inside the tube socks to make the spider's legs.
  2. Sew or pin the eight legs to the sides of the black tracksuit.
  3. Pull one pair of socks over your child's hands and one pair over his or her feet.

Note for babies: When your bub crawls along the ground, the spider legs will flop up and down and look like a spider!

Bug variation: To make a bug costume, use a green or brown (or any colour you choose) tracksuit and coordinating socks.

Cow

What you need:

  • White hooded tracksuit
  • Black fabric marker or black fabric/felt circles
  • Short piece of rope or 10-12 strands of black yarn, braided
  • Dog collar or old belt cut to size
  • Bell
  • 2 pairs of white socks

Instructions:

  1. Draw black spots on the tracksuit with a fabric marker or cut out circles from the felt/fabric and hand-sew them onto the suit.
  2. Unravel one end of the piece of rope and pin the closed end to the back of the tracksuit pants. (If using yarn, leave a bit unbraided towards the end of the tail.)
  3. Cut two large triangles of felt for the ears and hand-sew or hot-glue them onto the hood or headband. (Once again, hand-sewing will make the ears easily removable so you can reuse the tracksuit.)
  4. Pull one pair of socks over your child's hands and one pair over his or her feet.
  5. Stick the bell to a dog collar or belt for a very cute 'cow bell'!
